Member Spotlight: Shanaz Ghahyazi

Shanaz Spent the Summer in Quito Ecuador with an organization at UofM called the Quito Project

Hi! My name is Shanaz and I'm a sophomore from New Jersey studying economics with a minor in the environment. I'm passionate about making a positive difference in the world through my career and personal pursuits. Outside of Net Impact I love to play IM soccer, go for runs, try new sweet treats and spend time with my friends and sorority sisters.

Why did you join Net Impact?

I joined Net Impact to find a community of like minded individuals who care about the intersection of business and sustainability. I was eager to expand my knowledge of environmental and social impact issues as well as contribute to projects that drive sustainable missions forward. After attending rush events, I could see that the club and its members were genuinely passionate about creating positive impact through business. Joining Net Impact is one of the best decisions I have made in college.

What are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about reconfiguring business models and markets to address global challenges like climate change and social inequality. I believe that businesses have the power to drive systemic change and lead the shift towards a more sustainable and just world. I'm particularly interested in how businesses can integrate a triple bottom line structure, promote the circular economy, practice ethical labor, and uplift vulnerable communities.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned from Net Impact?

The most valuable thing I have learned from Net Impact is the power of a common goal. Despite diverse interests we can all come together to drive sustainable change. Everyone in the club has a rich and unique view on the world that shapes what they are passionate about. When we collaborate whether it is at general meetings, working on projects, or getting ice cream all of these diverse views compliment each other in a way that supports our main mission.

What is your favorite memory from Net Impact?

My favorite memory of Net Impact was our career trek to Detroit last semester. We visited TechTown Detroit and learned more about how they support startups and small businesses. Afterwards we ate at the Detroit Shipping Co. and watched a Tiger's game! The combination of professional development and fun made the trip truly memorable. It was also my first Tiger's game (Go Yankees though).

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include running, hiking, playing soccer, and drawing. I love learning new things and am always watching a documentary, movie, reading or googling random facts. I’m a big fan of comedy and when I have the time enjoy stand-up shows. I’m also currently in a ballet class although given my aptitude I don’t know how far I will pursue my study of dance.
